DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- An inmate at the Tomoka Correctional Institution was quickly transfered to the Florida State Prison on Thursday after officials said he raped and killed a prison guard.
Authorities identified the inmate as Enoch Hall, 39, who was sentenced to life in prison for sexual battery with a weapon and kidnapping charges in 1993. He had been at the facility since 1994.
The officer, Donna Fitzgerald, 50, was a veteran guard, who had worked at Tomoka Correctional Institution for 15 years.
Officials at the prison said Fitzgerald entered a warehouse area around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday after lights-out lockdown and found Hall hiding and was attacked.
"Words cannot express the sorrow I feel over the loss of our correctional officer," said Department of Corrections Secretary Walter McNeil. "The entire department grieves the murder of one of our finest officers, and we pray for the victim's family during this difficult time."
Fitzgerald worked in the area of the institution known as Pride, a vocational training facility.
The prison is located off U.S. Highway 92 on the outskirts of Daytona Beach. It was established in 1981 and houses adult male inmates. There is also a work camp and work release center at the facility. The prison can hold a maximum of 1,263 inmates.

Head Count Search Questioned

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. -- A hiding inmate used a makeshift knife known as a shiv to fatally stab a veteran female corrections officer who was trying to take him into custody inside a prison facility, WKMG-TV reported.
Enoch Hall, 39, was charged with first-degree murder Thursday for the death of 13-year veteran corrections officer Donna Fitzgerald at the Tomoka Correctional Institution in Daytona Beach.
At some point Wednesday night, Hall was discovered missing.
Searching for Hall, Fitzgerald entered a welding shed, spotted him and tried to take him into custody.
Hall admitted that he repeatedly stabbed Fitzgerald and hid the metal tool in a concrete block wall. The shiv was later found by officers.
Hall also said he was working in the prison's industrial facility when he grabbed a piece of sheet metal formed into a knife, WKMG reported.
Head Count Questioned--
Meanwhile, there are contradicting reports that Fitzgerald was conducting a head count when Hall was discovered missing.
A Department of Corrections representative said officers took a head count and that is when they discovered he was missing.
However, a prison secretary said the incident had nothing to do with a head count.
WKMG reported that if Hall was discovered missing during a head count, the facility should have been put on lockdown under prison policy.
Department of Corrections Secretary Walter McNeil explained the dangers officers face daily during a news conference Thursday afternoon.
"The general public does not always understand the dangers our officers face behind these fences," McNeil said. "As correction professionals, we know that each and every day the possibility of death and injury is an ever-present aspect of the job. Yet, when it happens -- like we all are across our department today -- it is shocking and heart-wrenching. We are dismayed."
Neighbor: 'Give Him Death'--
Meanwhile, Fitzgerald's neighbors and friends were offering help for the woman's family.
The woman's son, Kyle, also recently lost his father.
"We are all going to step in," a family friend said. "The family will step in and do whatever we can for him."
Several neighbors described Fitzgerald's generosity.
"From the day we moved in, she always invited us over for dinner," a neighbor said. "Give him the death penalty, as far as I'm concerned."
"Obviously, he didn't personally know her or it would not have happened," another neighbor said.
Hall Is Violent Criminal--
Hall is a violent criminal who was sentenced to life in prison for a kidnapping and sexual battery in Escambia County in 1993.
Hall was also charged and given a 12-year sentence for an earlier attack while in prison.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and Volusia County Sheriff's Office is assisting in the investigation.

DAYTONA BEACH - Enoch Hall, the prison inmate charged with murdering a corrections officer, appeared in court briefly today to hear the indictment made against him.
Hall, 39, who is already serving a life sentence for a rape and kidnapping, faces the death penalty if convicted of the first-degree murder of Donna Fitzgerald at Tomoka Correctional Institution.
Today, Hall appeared before Chief Circuit Judge J. David Walsh for his arraignment and State Attorney John Tanner read aloud the indictment against him. He is accused of attacking Fitzgerald at one of the prison work facilities and stabbing her repeatedly.
Walsh appointed the Public Defender's Office to represent Hall and Assistant Public Defender Jim Valerino announced that Hall would plead not guilty.
Tanner pressed for a trial to be held within six months and Walsh agreed to put Hall's case on the calender for a Sept. 23 pre-trial hearing.
The judge also ordered that Hall be securely held at the Volusia County Branch Jail so that he remain held locally while his attorneys prepare for trial.
After the hearing, Tanner said that he wanted to proceed with a death penalty trial quickly, to serve as a deterrent.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - DNA testing shows no evidence that the man authorities believe killed a Daytona Beach corrections officer raped her first.
Authorities say 39-year-old Enoch Hall, who was already serving two life terms for sexual battery and kidnapping, killed Officer Donna Fitzgerald last month. He pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder Thursday.
Investigators initially believed the officer had been raped after her body was found slumped over a cart with her pants and underpants pulled down. Authorities say her body was covered with stab wounds.
According to new court documents, DNA testing shows there's no evidence of rape.
Prosecutors are building a first-degree murder case against Enoch. State Attorney John Tanner says he will seek the death penalty.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- An inmate being held at a Daytona Beach state prison has been found guilty of killing a corrections officer.
A jury convicted 40-year-old Enoch Hall Friday of first-degree murder. Hall was already serving two life sentences at Tomoka Correctional Institution for kidnapping and sexual battery. He now faces a possible death sentence for fatally stabbing Corrections Officer Donna Fitzgerald in June 2008.
Investigators initially believed the officer had been raped after her body was found slumped over a cart with her pants and underpants pulled down, but DNA testing showed no evidence of rape. Authorities say her body was covered with stab wounds.
The penalty phase, where jurors will recommend a third life sentence for Hall or the death penalty, is set to begin Tuesday.

Jury Recommends Death In Prison Guard Killing--

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- A jury recommended the death penalty for an inmate who killed a Daytona Beach corrections officer.
The decision took 2½ hours of deliberation Thursday. Enoch Hall was already serving two life sentences in the sexual battery and kidnapping of a 66-year-old woman.
He stabbed 50-year-old Donna Fitzgerald 22 times with sheet metal in 2008, the first fatal attack on a Florida guard in five years.
Fitzgerald was alone while supervising Hall and others in an inmate work program. An investigation determined Hall may not have been eligible for the program and Fitzgerald should've had a radio or body alarm to summon help.
The prison has since hired a new warden, demoted three employees and restricted inmate access to sheet metal, tools and chemicals.
